September Movie Preview

September is upon us, and while there aren’t as many films being released, you can tell that it’s getting a little closer to awards season.  I’ve got a really good feeling about this Riddick movie.

Riddick

Release Date: September 6th

Synopsis: Betrayed by the Necromongers and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.  Directed by David Twohy and starring Vin Diesel.  Both having done the previous 2 feature films in the series.

Our Thoughts:

Felix: Pitch Black was better than expected, but unfortunately it gave us Vin Diesel.
Chronicles was… I don’t think I ever saw that movie completely because it was boring, barely had a plot, and Vin Diesel was overacting

Rob: Giving us Vin Diesel… isn’t that bad a thing? We’ve pretty well managed to contain him to Fast and Furious movies and these Riddick sequels which apparently are low budget enough to turn a profit…

Dammit! I jinxed things. – http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=38571

Jennie: While I probably will not be seeing this movie, I do appreciate that they are going back to the R rating category for this film. The first one was R and was reasonably successful. The second one they made PG-13 in hopes to widen the audience (which I get, but abhor for movies that really should be rated R) and it was, all things considered, a flop. This type of movie is supposed to be scary, violent, gory, and not appropriate for young teenagers.

Dave: For the life of me I will never understand why people go see Vin Diesel movies…It just hurts my brain to think about. He’s so awful. I just looked up his filmography…it hurts my head. He’s such a terrible actor and yet he is probably doing backstrokes through olympic-sized pools full of money in his mansion as I type this.

In case that was unclear: I’m going to skip this one.

Felix: But he was the bomb in Iron Giant!

Rob: No, he was the robot.

Felix: Yes but the robot was a giant bomb, hence, he was the bomb

Summer Movie Preview: June

It’s time for the next installment of our summer movie preview, this time we look all the way into June, 2013. “Zombies”, and Monsters, and Shakespeare, oh my!

The Internship

Release Date: June 7th

Synopsis: Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson get laid off and enter an internship program at Google where they must compete with younger, smarter interns for a job with the search giant. Also features Rose Byrne, B.J. Novak, Josh Gad, and Aasif Mandvi. Directed by Shawn Levy (Real Steel, Date Night, and the Night at the Museum franchise).

Our Thoughts:

Rob: I have a feeling that, for better or worse, you’re going to get exactly what you expect out of this one.

Jennie: I hope this movie is funnier than the trailer suggests. Also, am I the only one who thinks it’s strange that the old guy in the wheelchair knows who Charles Xavier is but they don’t have any clue?

Dave: I got to imagine if you’re an old, bald, professor in a wheelchair, you hear the reference from time to time.

Dave: I think the trailer looks funny enough. I generally enjoy the combination of Vaughn and Wilson, but I foresee waiting to see this one on on DVD. Looks like it may be the type of movie that shows you the funniest stuff in the trailer…but i guess you never know.

Nicki: I love this team. They could read the phone book and make me laugh. Just the scene of “What? What?!” alone, makes me want to see it.

Movie Review: 28 Weeks Later

Letter Grade:
(?)

F+
The Good:

Well, some of the shots are nice, when they allow them to last more than half a second and blatantly rip off Danny Boyle...

The Bad:

Oh God. So, soooo much...
Incompetent directing, horrendous editing, terrible script.

Cast & Crew:

Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo
Writers: Rowan Joffe, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Enrique López Lavigne , Jesús Olmo
Stars: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Robert Carlyle

[Originally published 5/12/2007. Edited to remove some spoilers and cursing.]

So I just saw 28 Weeks Later and… I… honestly… hated it.

And it’s weird how the hatred has grown. Halfway through the movie it was “this is a great movie that, because of incompetent direction, is just a good move”. Then 3/4 of the way through it, it was “this is a good movie that, because of incompetent direction, is just an ok movie”. Then leaving the theater it was “I… kinda… hated that….” Then by the time I got home it was “I haven’t hated a movie this much since Million Dollar Baby”. (more…)
