New Trailer: The Monuments Men
Art is a very important part of my life and all aspects of art history fascinate me. When I heard about the plans for The Monuments Men, I was beyond excited. There is a wonderful documentary written by the same man (Robert M. Edsel) who wrote the book this movie is based on. The documentary (which is also based on a book) is called The Rape of Europa and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. I will probably watch it again before seeing this film
This trailer is a lot funnier than I expected. It’s leaning more towards an Oceans movie than I would have thought. The screenplay was written by George Clooney & Grant Heslov, who are good team (The Ides of March & Good Night, and Good Luck). They are also the producers and have both had pretty good luck with that recently too, Argo in particular.
With this cast, the potentially wonderful writing, and the story, this is looking like a movie that should not be missed.

Final Trailer: Monsters University
Mike and Sulley are back in Pixar’s latest, this prequel to Monsters, Inc. Monsters University explores Mike and Sulley’s college days, back when they first met and were just learning how t scare children for a living. First-time Pixar director Dan Scanlon takes the helm and the characters are voiced by the likes of John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Aubrey Plaza, Nathan Fillion, and Helen Mirren.

Zach Galifianakis’ Alan is going through a rough(er) patch. He has been off his meds and decapitated a giraffe on a freeway overpass, leading his friends and family to stage an intervention. He agrees to go into treatment only if the Wolfpack will reassemble to take him to the rehab center. So the gang (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Justin Bartha) reassembles and off they go. They run into trouble on the road though as John Goodman intercepts them and kidnaps Doug until the Wolfpack finds Mr Chow (Ken Jeong), who has broken out of a Thai prison and owes Goodman’s character $21 million.

Part III has a much grander and more epic feel than the previous movies, and there’s some really nice landscape cinematography. The movie really belongs to Galifianakis and Jeong though, while Cooper and Helms are mostly just along for the ride. You get a lot more character development for Alan and Mr. Chow than you would expect. The film is at its best when this is happening, but as a comedy it does suffer from it as well. You’re not going to find as many laughs as you might expect, though the ones that are there are still quality.
Summer Movie Preview: June
It’s time for the next installment of our summer movie preview, this time we look all the way into June, 2013. “Zombies”, and Monsters, and Shakespeare, oh my!
The Internship
Release Date: June 7th
Synopsis: Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson get laid off and enter an internship program at Google where they must compete with younger, smarter interns for a job with the search giant. Also features Rose Byrne, B.J. Novak, Josh Gad, and Aasif Mandvi. Directed by Shawn Levy (Real Steel, Date Night, and the Night at the Museum franchise).
Our Thoughts:
Rob: I have a feeling that, for better or worse, you’re going to get exactly what you expect out of this one.
Jennie: I hope this movie is funnier than the trailer suggests. Also, am I the only one who thinks it’s strange that the old guy in the wheelchair knows who Charles Xavier is but they don’t have any clue?
Dave: I got to imagine if you’re an old, bald, professor in a wheelchair, you hear the reference from time to time.
Dave: I think the trailer looks funny enough. I generally enjoy the combination of Vaughn and Wilson, but I foresee waiting to see this one on on DVD. Looks like it may be the type of movie that shows you the funniest stuff in the trailer…but i guess you never know.
Nicki: I love this team. They could read the phone book and make me laugh. Just the scene of “What? What?!” alone, makes me want to see it.
Summer Movie Preview: May
Summer movie season is upon us with the release of Iron Man 3 this Friday, so the Cinedraft staff felt now would be a good time to take a look at what is coming up this summer. We start out with what’s coming out in May…
Iron Man 3
Release Date: May 3rd
Synopsis: Robert Downey Jr returns for another go-round as Tony Stark as he faces off against Ben Kingsley’s Manderin. Shane Black directs, and this will get Felix exceedingly excited. Also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, and either Don Cheadle or Terrence Howard, depending on how the coin flip turned out this time.
Our Thoughts:
Rob: This will be the real kick-off of the summer season. I’m not completely sold on Kingsley as the Mandarin, but I read that after seeing the Iron Man 3 finale Joss Whedon was upset because he didn’t know how he’d be able to top it for The Avengers 2, so expectations are pretty high.
Dave: I’m excited for Iron Man 3, I really am. I don’t doubt it will be a well made action film filled with funny Robert Downey Jr. one-liners. I suppose my only real worry about this film would apply to all Post-Avengers Marvel Universe movies… If the bad guy in Iron Man 3 is such bad news, why not just call in the rest of the Avengers to easily defeat him? Did they all have plans for the weekend that they couldn’t cancel? Seems like the conflict in this movie could be resolved by having the Hulk go in and slap Ben Kingsley around for a few minutes… problem solved.
Jennie: I am really looking forward to this movie. I think Robert Downey Jr is great and I generally have liked the Marvel movies over the last few years (not Ghost Rider of course). I like Ben Kingsly a lot and his voice sounds kind of awesome in the trailer, but I’m not sure how it will work with him as a action movie bad guy. I have no doubt that it’s going to be an entertaining movie. (more…)
